Advanced magnetic resonance imaging of the brain

Abstract


Since its development, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology has improved at an unparalleled rate and, due to it’s exquisite soft tissue contrast, has become the method of choice for neuro-and spinal imaging. The contrast of MRI images can be manipulated by changing machine parameters in a way that exploits the different magnetic properties of different tissues. MRI is extremely flexible and can be used to image structure, function, metabolism, strain, perfusion, and diffusion. Another advantage of MRI is the fact that there is no ionizing radiation. This paper presents an overview of two advanced neuroimaging methods, specifically functional MRI (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), that are increasingly used in routine clinical practice and provide specific information that is not available using standard imaging methods.
