Abstract

Mastalgia is on of the commonest breast symptoms presenting to general practitioners and surgeons. The majority of women will experience mastalgia during their lifetime but it is usually mild and self limiting. Anxiety about breast cancer is the primary reason women with mastalgia present to their medical practitioners. The management of mastalgia includes screening for breast cancer, reassurance for the majority of patients and, where necessary, specialist medical treatment.
